LQ105 - Notre Dame Terrace
Paris Upscale Apartment Rental in the Latin Quarter
1-bedroom / 1-bathroom vacation rental

Summary:

1 Bdr - 1 bath
Sleeps: 3 guests
Size: 700 sq/ft

Location:

In the 17th century, when this building was constructed, the Rue de Bièvre had an open river coursing down it, and was a passage for cut-throats and thieves, from the 'Rive Gauche' - left bank, to the 'Rive Droite' - right bank of Paris . Thank goodness for Parisians, the River Bièvre was diverted and put underground, and this little street slumbered on, on the Rive Gauche, until it was discovered by François Mitterrand, while strolling through the old parts of Paris , as he loved doing before he became President of France. He fell in love with it, and bought a house at number 22 Rue de Bièvre. All the buildings in the street were immediately renovated to a high standard. With him came intellectuals, politicians, lawyers, who jockeyed with each other, to buy an apartment near the then President's private home. The President has died, but the atmosphere of the road which he so wanted to preserve, has lived on.

-Turn left out of your front door and take twenty steps and you are on the Quai de la Tounelle along the Seine, with Notre Dame Cathedral in front of you and the Ile Saint Louis and Ile de la Cité, birthplace of Paris . You can take a Bateau-Bus up and down the Seine , or buy books and maps and drawings at the Bouquiniste stalls along the Quais, or you can sit in a café and have a drink or an ice-cream from Bertillon and watch Parisian life go by.

-Turn right out of your front door and take a few more steps, and you arrive at the charming Place Maubert, with the Metro, taxis, buses, a baker (Kayser - one of the great bakers of Paris) a butcher, fishmonger, vegetable and fruit shop, florist, and a renowned twice-weekly market, and the Boulevard Saint Germain, beloved by French intellectuals, with its cafés and cinemas.

-Better still, sit and have breakfast on your little terrace (the only one in the street), surrounded by plants, and watch Paris wake up; see François Mitterrand's bookbinder, Lulu, arrive and open her shop opposite, look at the few people walking along the street on their way to the Sorbonne, or to the little boutiques, and savor the atmosphere and the quiet, as the street has a 'no entrance' sign for traffic at both ends, so cars, baffled, don't take it. Listen to the birds singing in the little public garden on the street, while you decide what you will do with your day.
